found a crayfish on street

5-6 inches is one huge crayfish. Are you sure it's not a lobster? Got away from someone's Sunday dinner?

I used to enjoy keeping crayfish in my native tanks. But one warning, they will eat anything. And that includes sleeping fish that it can catch. If it's small enough and slow enough to grab, the crayfish will eat it.

There are many species of crayfish that get to be 5-6". The largest crayfish is the giant tasmanian crayfish (Astacopsis gouldi) which can grow to almost 3' in length. Here is a picture of one of those beasts.

hmm.... escaping.. but how? do they like jump out or something? then why not get a lid :p:

 that's one ginormous crayfish!

*EDIT*Just asking, what's the difference of crayfish and lobster? i thought crayfish was baby lobster or something...

Crayfish = Freshwater, Lobster = Saltwater. I was reading somewhere that the Murray Crayfish was physiologically identical to a common lobster, with the exception of the fresh water adaptation.

OMG! That crayfish is huge! I would be so scared to lift it up. As it was I used a large spatula when I had to move the crayfish. It was released in a "creek" nearby the housing development. I realized that was where it probably came from. Plus it escaped from the tank twice! I realized there was no way it could be kept indoors.
