I am leaving for a 1 week vacation tomorrow, and in preparation, I did a deeper cleaning of my 29 gallon and 10 gallon tanks. In removing the all of the decor in the tanks, I discovered 1 guppy baby and 1 platy baby. I was able to isolate them to a breeders net and went out a got 5 gallon tank for them. I set up the 5 gallon, it has a bio-wheel filter in the hood, added a heater and started the filter. I took a piece of sponge from the 29 gallon. (29 gallon is fully cycled) and laid it on top of the filter cartridge of the 5 gallon, to help jump start the cycle for the 5 gallon tank. Will the babies be okay if I put them in the 5 gallon now or should I just keep them in the breeder's net for now?
Also, I have someone to keep an eye on the tanks while I'm gone, but I was only going to have them feed the fis, once a day, every other day. Would the fry be able to survive being fed on such a schedule? Since I just discovered them, I kinda want to see them grow up now ;) Any advice?

well, you certianly didn't need to get a 5 gallon tank for just two fry, but, as you know, bigger is better! ;) I would suggest telling your fish watcher to pulverize the flakes of food in his/her hand very well before feeding them to your fry, or, better yet, get some baby brine shrimp or a microworm culture and feed them that.

I did hesitate to get another tank, but since I hve several guppies and platies, and a couple do look like they are in the family way also, I thought I better be prepared. ;)

a fishmaster, become you shall!

One thing you want to make sure of.... is that when you put them in that 5 gallon tank...make sure the filer doesnt have slots big enough to suck in the babies. if it is, then get a pair of panty hose, and put that around the whole filter. With any livebearer, you can almost expect to have fry every month.

Good Luck!
