I just lost my striped Rachael,2 spotted picos, and 2 clown loaches. I think I saved my upsidedown catfish in time. I had used Paragon II to get rid of a bad case of ick that I had gotten when I purchased some live plants for the first time. It said it was safe for all fish!!! This is the worst case I've had since I started my aquarium three years ago. I have had ich twice but maybe I noticed it sooner and it cleared up pretty fast. But now all of my fish have it really bad. I moved the upside catfish to a small tank that I have five striped zebra fish in. How do you treat a tank with a variety of fish in? I have started raising my temperature and adding sea salt. Today I added Quick cure at half strengh due to a few tetras I have. Any other suggestions?:shake: :shake:

I raise the temp to 85, and add salt. The high temp speeds up their life cycle and will kill the parasite. Maintain this for 4-5 weeks after the last visible sign of infection to kill off any tomites released.

Medication only work on the tomites--the other life stages of the parasite are not killed off.

Welcome aboard, BTW. Sorry it's too late for some of your fish.

Thanks for the response. I have read several versions of what temp to use, some as high as 90. like the temperature you suggested.

85 is the level proven to kill the parasite, above that and I worry it will stress the fish.

Orion Girl,
I know this site is for catfish, but iIneed your help again concerning the ich we have been discussing. I have 2 tri colored sharks that both have the ich also. the largest one is doing bably. He is getting a film over his eyes and some larger wnite patches on him that look a little fuzzy. Can I help him? Not sure what to do ,

OG is right! Also, I have been struggling with a bit of ick and have used Mardel's Maracide. I got it at Petsmart. I have all kinds of catfish and two Clown Loaches and all were just fine with full strength treatment. I left the old Charcoal filter in during treatment. Follow the directions and you should be OK. Of course do a water change at the end of the course of treatment.

Good Luck!

If you are going to use meds for ich then I suggest following the directions excactly in the packaging. I have used Mardels other meds and they seem safe from my experiences. I know their popeye meds say to not do a water chaneg during the treatment but that varies so read the package carefully. Also I would definatly remove any charcoal from the filter as this can lead to problems. Have fresh carbon ready for the end of the treatment.

I also just had a big Ich infestation, and lost my pictus cat, 2 clown loaches, and my Striped Rafael isn't looking too good. None of them had Ich too bad, so I'm wondering if they couldn't tolerate the medicine. I used RidIch+ (a formaldehyde/malachite green mix) which I had been told is a very safe and effective medicine. now the rafel seems to be covered in a whitish slime (his eyes are an opaque white) and his scales, especiall along his side, are standing on end. Any ideas?
Thanks
