Fountain

Here's the little fountain I put together for my mom. It holds 2.5 gallons, and is filtered and heated. We're planning to put a male betta in it.
The vining plants are purple heart plants, which do surprisingly well with their root immersed.

My filtration is a fountain pump with a sponge fitted around the intake. Would it be possible to jump-start the cycle by squeezing the sponge into some used filter media? Would that transfer over enough bacteria?

and yes you can use squeezings,... or just cut a piece of media and hide it behind rocks by filter pump,..

Yes, just squeeze some old "used" filter material or sponge into the new filter---It will definatly jump start it.

My mom only wants a male. It's in the same room as my betta sorority, so another female would just be more of the same old thing for her.

i would not put any living animal in there.

I think a male beta would be ok in there, I like putting them in 5 gallons but I've seen then kept in much smaller tanks, in the 2-3 gallon range, so as long as care is taken, good luck and I think you'll be fine.
