Frag tank to Mini Reef

Yes, sand sifting stars do tend to starve to death in tanks, moreso in ones as small as this one. Since the tank is so recently set up, there's likely very little for it to sift out of the sand at this point. It would be much better suited in an established tank that's at least 2 - 3x the size as this one, with a DSB. If you plan on keeping it, the star would benefit from being fed regularly to help it survive. Hopefully, it won't cause a rock slide in your tank as it moves about and digs around.

Was your yellow tang bitten by something? It looks like a small chunk is missing out of its dorsal fin near the front. Similarly, the yellow tang isn't going to do well in a tank this small for very long.

I'll have to check on the Tang. I didn't notice it. This is just a temporary set up. Maybe a month. Then the 90 will be ready.

Sand Sifter Star

I also thought I add to the starfish starving in small young tanks. The one I had did well in a 55 gallon but I still would scoop him up once a week and place him in a plastic container with the sand in it..(nothing big)... and had krill mixed in....let him sift around in that little bowl and eat a bit.

He lasted a year and died by accident vs starvation.

Checked out the Tank and it either got nipped or scratched itself on one of the rocks. There may have been a sharp edge he came into contact with. He seems to be buddies with both the Clown and the Wrasse. So far, 2 weeks and everything is still healthy and living well, except for the corals that arrived dead from getting too cold in shipment.

Well, I had to share with you the latest addition to my mini-reef tank. This is about 3" x 3.5" I've got to figure out how to get the washed out look. This is very bright neon green.

Like the new gonipora -great color even if it appears washed out from the real one due to the photo. When I had my first tank I couldn't resist the temptation of a sand sifting star.....and then I read about the notion that the deplete the sandbed of all the beneficial elements that we strive to culture in the sand. So, off to the LFS and I returned him. Still really like them, but now have a serpent star in its stead.

Just read your clown observations. They are a riot. MIne use the fuzzy mushrooms as beds and lay flat on them, under the edges, etc.

I feed pretty heavy so the Star may be ok. The clown is funny but very shy. Can't get him to come out from behind the ricks except every once in a while when I feed. I'll try for a better shot gonipora later on today.

Thanks CK. Here are some more photos of the corals I've got. I'll post some close-ups later. I'll have to start deciding on what rocks I want to mount these.

Here's my latest addition. Within an hour he was eating everything that came by that was eatable.
