Free Fish Stuff?

www.craigslist.org. This is the place for free stuff. I've so far gotten a 75, a 29, tons of fish, including a 10 inch banded leporinus, and plenty of filters and heaters and such. I've also gotten 2 20 gallon and a 55 for free just from asking around to people. Post up an ad on craigslist saying you will take in any unwanted fish/aquariums/supplies, and explain something about your knowledge of fish. It's surprising how many people will give away tanks to the right home.

Hmm, I wish I could get a 55g for free. I'm looking to get a few (about 3-4). I currently have an 8 foot 250g tank I bought off someone on craigslist a year ago and never got to set it up. I've been trying it sell it. Soon I'll be moving and can't take it with me so it might end up on craigslist for free.

I once got four 10g tanks with hob filters, a heater, and a huge box of random aquarium supplies for free off craigslist. A month ago I bought two 20g tanks for $30 and he gave me a free quarter to half-dollar sized blue silver ghost angel fish for free! He costs over $30 online.

My local aquarium clubs have raffles, auctions and door prize drawings of numerous supplies. The minimal annual membership costs can be recouped at one meeting. We are supported well by numerous name brand and aspiring companies. My fish get a diverse sampling of food. It gives you a chance to test it out before plunking down funds on an expensive hit and miss basis. Hopefully your area is a fortunate as mine with wonderful meetings of like minded hobbyists.

Leoslizards, where's your part of the world? 55's for a 250 is a deal that I'd drive a few miles for. The ones that I have are actually wasting space for me 'cuz they're only 12" wide and the shelves that they sit on are 18" deep.

Craigs List, Penny Saver, Newspaper Classifieds, Eviction clean outs, Moving - Garage & Yard sales at the end of the day (people hate moving aquariums, but hate moving them twice in the same day even more).

Tried the fish rescue thing and it almost broke me. Every time I would agree to take someone's unwanted fish I'd end up with septic diseased critters that I'd spend oodles of dough on trying to save only to end up having most of them succumb in the end.

Anytime there was a tank attached to the deal I'd usually end up loosing net tank space. Last case example: neighbor's adult daughter had a son leave home and abandon a tank that she didn't want or know how to take care of. Said I could have the whole shootin' match if I took the fish too. Nice nearly new 43g. tank and stand w/ a Topfin 10 HOB stuffed with paper towels for filtration. She had kept dumping food in the tank for the past several weeks but didn't know what else to do. There were (5) 5-6" fantail goldfish, (3) large SAE's, (5) dwarf Gouramis, (3) Botias, and an 8" Trinidad Pleco still barely alive and a half dozen or so dead that I couldn't ID. The water looked like baby poo. Everybody had something different wrong with them and after struggling for weeks I lost almost all of them and spent over $30 in meds. Aside from that, I just can't stand loosing a fish. Even if it's not my fault.

Remember - No good deed goes unpunished.

Ouch, a 10g hob filter with paper towels. I'm guessing that non of the dwarf gouramis made it? I had a hard time keeping those alive in a pretty healthy tank. I got them to breed though. Do you still have the goldfish?

You could also try freecycle. You have to first post something for free before you can request anything.
