free flowing pond

It would be interesting to know the water parameters before putting the fish in there, but if it was used as a Koi pond in the past, it should work out.

From what your water source is, there's not much you can do to change the water parameters....

Tests that concern me more than anyother in keeping Koi are KH(carbonate hardness) and NitrAte build up. I would assume the later would be moot considering this pond has a constant water exchange. KH and pH should be tested regularly - and while you can't really alter these effectively because of the ponds free flow, it is something you should watch as it may change through out the seasons, enabling you to expect/watch your fish for signs of possible distress. You may find that having very low KH will effect Koi colour and skin luster - they certianly aren't a fish that thrives in acidic water but will do ok none the less - thier bodies just work a little harder at maintaining an equalibrium.

Since this system was used for Koi in the past you might want to discuss, if possible, concerns and/or maintenance issues with the previous owners.
