Hi I'm new, and i got a free albino cory from walmart two days ago I'm new to catfish... i got him free because i asked the fish guy at walmart to give me to SAE's for one of my tanks he made a joke saying i would want one of the fastest fish in the tank lol so as he tried to catch my newest additions a white albino cory jumped into the net (i guess he wanted a new home lol) with a algae eater obviously he wasent going to let the fish get away so he said he wont charge me for it so i said i guess i can keep it.. when i got home i was thinking what in the heck did i get for free cause at first i didnt know what he was. So i did some research on the internet and found out that he/she is a albino cory i also noticed in a picture that they have these whisker type thing on their mouth so i went to the tank and took a look at cory. Cory has no whiskers and his fin on his back looks like it been chewed on so maybe he was picked on at walmart he was mixed with bala sharks i think and SAE's will his whiskers grow back. I can take a pic of cory if it is needed to get a further evaluation of the fish if i can its so hyperactive lol... thanks for the advice or extra info:laugh:

^ that's kind of an old wive's tale, considering their natural environment contains rough/sharp substrate.

As long as you keep the water clean and the cory well fed, the whiskers and fins will grow back just fine. If you have the space, you should look into getting more. If not, giving him away would be the second best option.

thanks for the help everyone.. i plan on keeping him i'm going to get him some buddies ASAP

I agree with zzyzx85 but want to add that more often than not, it's dirty substrate that causes barbel erosion. You should gravel vac well anyway when doing tank maintenance, but especially so when you'be got bottom sifters/feeders like cories.
