Yup, and pond fish are usually fed extra for the few monts prior to winter to fatten up for the long winter.

It is common for shallow lakes up north to have a fish die off during winters with little snow (usually extra cold winters) because the lake freezes solid. It is not pretty come spring.

Beyond not actually freezing the fish when a pond freezes, they still need at least some open water on the surface for gas exchange.

yeah my pond freezes over lightly during the winter time, but my goldies and koi remain perfectly ok! i've gone through many goldies due to lack of inexperience when trying to clear a green pond up....they typically grow very large though so i know i'm doing something right , i'm expecting some little ones during the winter though, last year i almost successfully raised three goldie fry, only one survived and made it to be a juvenile (comet+blue oranda mix prob.) its swimming around with my other fishies, i wonder if koi go through the same breeding conditions as goldies...?

Cutie some animals have evolved survival techniques for literally freezing solid. My guess with goldfish is that although they may survive near freezing water temperatures they more than likely would die if their bodies are allowed to freeze. The water inside their bodies would freeze too, tearing apart their inner cells and organs as the ice expands and contracts. So it's easy to see why this wouldn't be reccomended.
Do you have a plan B for these guys?
