Well, after a short lived crisis of overstocking, I am currently cycling a new 120gal for my cichlids, wich will leave me with an established 55gal, ready to go. So, I was just wondering if anyone has any interseting or unusual ideas for stocking my 55gal. I have probably 1-3 weeks left before my 120 is ready, so I thought I would ask you knowledgable folk first, before narrowing my choices. thanks for any opinions, or suggestions.

That is like saying "can you tell me what to do with my empty garage"...

Tell us what you like, miss from current setups, have been considering, don't like, hate, what your tap water readings are, what kind of money you want to spend... some kind of inclination as to what you want or like.

Do you like plants, have acidic water, hate snails, like schooling fish, want low maintenance, like watching breeding, think shrimp are cool...

And I am assuming that because you are talking about this being a "setup" that will exist and be cycled after the new cichlid tank is ready, that what you mean is you will have a biofilter, but you might be willing to change pH????

Many many factors...

ok

my tap water is usually soft approx 35, and ph is low, so i do have to adjust water when doing changes, so adjusting for different fish won't be a problem, the problem is, i don't know what i want. I want something that will grow, but not outgrow a 55, I've never done any breeding, but I would like to. I don't really want live plants(yet). I now research fish before I buy, so all pertinant adjustments will be made prior to adding fish. I don't know, guess I've had a couple rum & cokes, and wanted some other sucess stories. Also, high maintnence fish aren't a problem, ask my girlfriend, I spend "WAY TO MUCH TIME" on my fish.

If you've already got soft water, you could chuck in some driftwood and add a few longfin bristlenose for breeding.. There's your ground floor fish...
