I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank that i started a week ago and i was thinking of going to brackish i was told that most freshwater fish will adjust and thrive in brackish. how true is this. And i'm not shure weather or not i want to add live plants if i do how will they do.
Well ... a lot of fish can adapt to different kinds of water but there's a difference between thrive and tolerate. What you should do is figure out what kind of fish you want. Then decide what you need to do with the water. Having brackish water IS going to limit you unless all you want are brackish fish.
Brackish also covers a broad spectrum of salinity. There's a broad sweep between fresh and saltwater and anything inbetween is considered brackish. Many of the fish we keep are coastal fish and have a fluctuating salinity level anyways. What kind of fish do you have? Do you have any plants yet? Java Fern is the only plant I've been able to keep alive in my brackish tank and it is thriving. As for the fish, many rainbows and killies can be found in brackish water and fish such as betta mahachai have an environment that is flooded with seawater on a regular basis so I suspect they would live there as well. You'll also find a lot of livebearers that will actually do better in a slightly brackish condition and some, like mollies, will live in pure saltwater. KYle
It's not true that most fish will adjust and thrive in brackish. There are some fish that should never be kept in brackish. You can read here: http://www.aquariacentral.com/faqs/brackish/FAQ1.shtml#1e for some information about fish that can't be kept in brackish.
There are some plants that can tolerate low end brackish but then some brackish fish eat plants so I personally haven't had any luck with plants in a brackish tank. Although the scats enjoyed my attempts.
Thank you for the info i was thinking of getting a couple of freshwater flounders but i but i already have two bandit cories four danio and two neon tetras so the brakish theme won't work.
But about the freshwater flounders i've been reading up on them to mixed reviews most people say that they prefer freshwater when they are young but as they grow they tend to prefer brackish. I have also read that it is ok to keep them in freshwater they just will not fully mature
There is more than one type of freshwater flounder. They have different requirements for salinity. The main difficulty in keeping them seems to stem around feeding. They are hard to ween off live food and they do not compete well for food. There is some information in this site http://www.tropicalfishfinder.co.uk/article_detail.asp?id=35
