Freshwater Crabs

nah, my tank is too full with ornaments already. Nice suggestion though.

from the research I have done on crabs... crabs can do fine in FW as long as they get the nutrients they need to molt (calcium and something else that I cant remember) these nutrients are readily available in a brackish set up, but not in a FW apparently.

I have 3 fiddler crabs in a FW setup and they have been doing just fine. I feed them food that is enriched with the nutrients they are supposed to get inorder to molt... If you want to know what they are, you'll have to do some researching or ask someone who knows a bit more about them.

You can buy an "underwater island" setup that is basically a bubble a crab could use for oxygen access.

I just found out my brother 55g tank got destroyed by a crayfish he put in there. It killed a pleco pretty good and tore the eyes out of a baby jack dempsey. So no crabs in my tank.

hmm

crayfish.... oh you mean crawfish/crawdads :read: :rant2: :argue:

I remember me and a friend used to catch crawfish all the time in a stream on his property. It was awesome because they could scoot under another rock or pinch you... :o

Roan, crayfish are opportunistic predators, including Procambarus sp. I've done a lot of thing that worked when research said it wouldn't, but I don't recommend other people give it a go because it worked for me.
I understand what you are saying, but every incident I've read about crayfish nasties has always been linked to or turned out to be Cherax sp..

I've never read anything from anyone that definitely said their Procambarus sp. terrorized the tank. Quite the opposite.

Procambarus really gets a bum wrap :( I always advise that they should be the only bottom feeder. I've never said they go hand in hand with cories or sucker fish. I wouldn't advise that, although I *have* said that my Procambarus gets along fine with my pleco and snail in the 20gal. That's just my experience with that particular cray.

I have some Red-claw crabs (the only FW crabs I've seen in fish stores locally), and they do fine. I have tall plants that go above the water, but I've never seen the crabs climb them to get air access (figured they would, but I've never seen them). And they don't bother the fish, they're more afraid of them. And they don't bother snails at all, in fact they usually hide together.

The only problem is that they hide all the time! Only rare-ly I see one walking around, and I think my Pictus Catfish is scaring them too much.

Neat little guys, they're awesome, i just never see them. I've only had them a few weeks, maybe it just takes some time for them to get used to the tank?

I also add Iodine suppliment to the tank every week. Its sold as a SW additive. I also added it for the Ghost shrimp, so they can molt properly.
