Peacock eel (Macrognathus siamensis) would be your best bet for a 40-55g or try the Polypterus sp..
Yup I will second peacock eel, very pretty, my LFS has one right now that is less than an inch, but he wants $16.99 and it would just be an expensive snack to something else in my tank.
Plagiostoma spiney eels from Lake Tanganykia are one of the few smaller species (under 12" adult size). Not very commonly seen listed f/s, and expensive when they are, $45-$50 is about the lowest price you're likely to find. However, they don't burrow into the substrate like most species. They will eat frozen foods quite happily, and some folks feed them flakes or pellets. Their favorite food is cichlid eggs, but they don't bother fry once they've hatched.
