bettas are a nice elegant fish but if you are to get one keep it alone. I know somebody who keeps dozens of platys in a 5 gal and he never lost one until ick claimed them. My friend also keeps a very small b.reed of cory in his 5g. Also a small breed of tetra like neons or just a few red eyes. just nothing big and that will move in sudden darts unless you have a round tank. I lost a bala shark in a 10g back when I was a newbie, he darted into the glass because something spooked him and then he broke his spine. Just be careful and don't buy anything too expensive due to the fact smaller tanks are harder to maintain.
