what are the breeding habits of gulf pipefish? does anyone breed them? if so do u sell them online? i was thinking about catching some and breeding them in a small pond. is that even legal? am i asking too many questions? anything would be appreciated.

I think "freshwater" pipefish may be brackish. Also, I don't think you could breed a relative to the seahorse in a pond.

In the article, the breeder even suggests to change salinity frome FW to BW to full SW... so pure FW doesnt seem like a good idea at all times. Even changing salinity every week seems stressful but I dont know much about SW...

I believe gulf pipefish get quite a ways inland, so they are probably truly euryhaline and can thrive in various salinities from full fresh to full salt, just like three-spine sticklebacks, mummichogs, or certain mollies. Whether they will breed in freshwater, I don't know. Obviously you need to set up multiple tanks and run a breeding experiment in order to edify the rest of us!

Mike Hellweg is a pretty frequent contributor to TFH magazine, and if I remember correctly, these pipefish can even be found in New Orleans' Lake Ponchatrain, which is mainly freshwater, but gets influxes of saltwater from gulf flooding. Weekly salinity shifts would likely not be stressful, as most brackish fish will endure vast salinity changes with the ebb and flow of the tides.

Just want to add: 6 in a 10 gallon is a real no-no.
