I know they are huge and highly predatory- at least the Asian species.

How much do these things cost?

Thanks

around here you can get them as feeders for 1.99 or you can get the blue crayfish for about 15-30$

yep, something eats them they are like 3" long and have claws so it must be a very aggresive fish

I have seen four- to five-inch Macrobrachium rosenbergii, the "giant blue prawn" you have in mind, going for $13.99 ($9.99 with a "PALS" card discount) at Petco. The cheapest means of obtaining one would be to purchase it from a retail store carrying them as feeders (either explicitly or accidentally [typically as a contaminant amongst ghost shrimp]).

Only small specimens are suitable for use as feeders (typically for arowanas or large cichlids); even then, the rostrum and claws are typically removed.

[Look to this link (note the use of scissors).]

Larger prawns are usually used frozen or fresh-killed (with sharp appendages removed).

none of those look like the feeder shrimp, they are dark red with pretty heavy looking pinchers. They do not really get along with each other and I saw some of them canabalizing so i am not sure what it is. It is just labeled feeder shrimp (they look like small lobsters)

In that case, they sound more like mislabeled crayfish, possibly Procambarus clarkii, than shrimp.
