Does anyone know much about the Freshwater Puffer fish?? My husband brought 2 home from the pet store a couple of weeks ago... They are the cutest little guys. They were labeled as “Freshwater Dwarf Puffer Fish”.. Sorry I don’t have a photo but it is a puffer fish that has leopard print… if that helps?? The store told him they get about 3-4 inches big, are aggressive fish and love to hide in caves.

Well here is what I have found out though research online.. They only get about 1 inch big, are very aggressive fish (although we haven’t seen this behavior yet) and never hide.. The little guys swim around looking at the rock and plants all day and night and LOVE to swim up to the glass when someone is by the fish tank.. They love to eat the flake food and frozen blood worms and brine shrimp.

Has anyone had any or know anything about them?? Advise, comments, thoughts, suggests, etc would be great.

Yep..they are called Dwarf Puffer Fish I have 2 of them myself.....awesome little fish.....I could tell you all about them but just go to the follwoing site for all the info you need.

I want to get some of these guys but none of mY LFS has them. Anyone know a good place to get me some of these guys for my 10g tank?

ummmmm..... dwarf puffers hardly get between 3 and 4 inches..... more like up to an inch or so.... nothing more. They can be aggressive as fin nippers but this is an individual characteristic so it is often suggested to keep these guys in a species specific tank in case there are these issues. The are snail eaters but can also be fed frozen blood worms and brine shrimp. I've never tried live blood worms aor Brine shrimp, but I would assume they are ok too....

Tell your LFS to order some for you

When I picked mine up they were fine for while in a community tank, but after about 8 weeks, I had to get a tank specifically for them. They got very bully, so I would not put them into a 10G with other fish.
Also, they are very messy eaters and add a lot to the bioload.
Most people recommend having no more than 1 dwarf puffer for each 3G.

I hope this helps.... they are great little fish, and a species tank is not as bad as I thought it would be (I always thought it would be boring, but those guys make it fun!).

They also love blackworms, and a crunchy diet does not seem as important for them as their larger cousins.

A species tank is the best for them, preferably heavily planted. I agree w/Stephanie's suggestion of one dwarf puffer per 3 gallons tank capacity. Most will accept/ignore Otos as tankmates, many wil accept the common algae-eating FW shrimp as tankmates as well (Amano, Red Cherry, etc.) but a few do kill and shrimp.

I have to ask, how big are they now. A full grown Dwarf gets to be only 1 inch long. You may want to verify that you do have dwarf puffers since it is not uncommon for the lfs to mislabel fish. Figure 8's are spotted and do get to 3-4 inches long but they are a brackish fish, Green Spotted Puffers are spotted also and get up to 6 inches and need full marine as adults. Just something you need to watch out for.

I have sen the little dwarfs at my LFS and they are very cute. Just make sure to keep them in a species only tank. Some people have had them share their tank with other fish, but do not be suprised when the other fish gets small bites taken out of him.
