freshwater tanks and the odors inside them

The only time I notice an odor from my tanks is when my nose is about three inches from the water's surface: usually the week before I'm scheduled to clean my filter.

Mine don't smell at all or have the smell of fresh dirt in the springtime. If they smell bad, it can be due to overfeeding, a dead fish (ugh!), cyanobacteria (the so-called blue-green algae). Probably other things can cause it, too but that's what comes to mind.

As stated by others there should not be a noticeable smell. That said a slight odor should not be an argument for not having fish. My dog's breath smells much worse than the water in my fish tank.

mine only smells when i change water but thats cause i always spill some and gavel vac. i dont smell anything fishy anymore even after being waist deep in my pond or up to my ankels in sludge when i go into the water garden. my mom complains though

There's no odor emanating from my tanks at all. When I'm cleaning or if I stick my nose right up to them, maybe an earthy smell, like when you dig around in a garden, which certaily isn't a bad smell.

I didn't say it was a bad smell, I just said it was a smell. But it is only right before a scheduled filter cleaning, and like I said, I hav to be right at the water level.

hey whats up will my tank did have a odor and i was wondering where it was coming from i smelled everthing and coud'nt figure what it was then when i was about to do a water change i take the leads off and where the light is over the glass it had built up with this green alge and it smelled horrible so if you have a smell check that also just alittle help
