yellow actually means 0 (undetectable) ammonia.
i wouldnt go against the directions on the test kit. just me though. test kits are inexpensive enough so that you shouldnt need to skimp on tests.
I appreciate the cautions about not following the instructions, but the way I figure it, as long as the proportions are the same, I'll get the same results.

That is, unless they've drastically changed science in the last 15 years, because that is how it worked for the 10 years I was a science teacher.
