Well like glass the idea is to do an initial cleaning and then start the UV. Any growth after the UV is doing its job even on the sand, gravel or glass will be so minimal and sparse it will take 6 months before there is enough to clean off. But yes like so many other tings you manually remove first and then prevent.

All my occasional diatom and algae blooms including algae growth has become almost non-existent due to a great UV sterilizer called the Green Killing Machine (GKM). A U shape 24 Watt UV bulb housed is a special baffle and matched with a specific slow 25 GPH power head.

The specs for the 9w says "Filtration pump (200 L/hour)" or 52 GPH. Did you fix yours for 25 GPH? Is 52GPH OK for a 55g tank? Thank you.
