That's what I'm thinking, it looks like tempered glass that took a blow from something solid. Regular glass would have shattered outright. It's interesting that Marineland uses tempered glass on the tank sides as well as the bottom. Even AGA I think only used tempered on the bottom for the smaller tanks.

They don't use tempered glass.

Its an acrylic tank.

To all of those saying something "hit it." The cracking is on the back of the tank. It would have been physically impossible for anyone to hit the back of the tank in the position it was placed. The tank massively failed.

Or maybe somebody bumped it, and the back was lodged against something and put under some type of pressure resulting in it cracking in the back instead of the front?

Is it by a window? Under a vent? I'd love to find out what's going on so I can make sure not to repeat it... (sorry!) I think I'll go home and take closeups of my tank every where I thought was a scratch and keep them on file in case I notice them growing. Oh and I finally got around to registering that product...

What kind of desk is it on? Anything that would be flexible or strain under the 120 lbs plus of the tank? Maybe it if was bending or leaning in some direction, it also strained the frame. I'm really afraid of this in my case - my tank is on an aquarium stand that has rails instead of a totally flat service. It appears to be balanced but... sheesh, ever notice the more research you do into fish keeping the worries just stack and stack?!

Are you able to get a new one? Do you want to get a new one...

the tank is acrylic?

I had one of those turkey baster syringes made out of clear plastic, and some acetone spilled on it and it fractured in seconds. I would suspect your cleaning crew, they may have been trying to dust around the tank and gotten some sort of chemical on the back of the tank or something.

I have a 125 gal tank in my office lobby and I have to constantly put the fear of GOD in the maid serviceso they won't spray aerosols, or use chemicals around it.

Yeah, I've seen cheap plastic get that way form being in the sun too long..I would say it was either in direct sunlight or some chemical got on it. There have been many people on here with Eclipse tanks and I've never seen anything like this...if it was a recurring problem we definitely would have heard something before now. Maybe they had a bad batch of plastic or something. In any case, I'd definitely call them about a new one.

Ah, I didn't realize the Eclipse tanks were acrylic!

I'd definitely follow-up with Marineland though, with a bit of coaxing you might be able to get them to send a new tank.

NEW! Bulletproof glass tanks! Full protection for your fish! :D

man, that's massive scratches.... same thing happened to my critter carrier... but i think i did it on purpose

it coulve been the wieght of the tank bowing the wood under it as others have mentioned

the first thing that came to my mind when i saw the pics was what happens when you have a warm peice of glass and the suddenly something cold touches it and it cracks. the acrylic couldve been warm from the heater of the building, anf then a draft of cold air from outside couldve gotten to it.

Strangely, it didn't take any coaxing at all.

I just stated what happened, explained that it was on a level, strong desk, nothing had hit it, etc, and they are sending me a new tank.

An incredibly frustrating experience to be sure, but kudos to Marineland for stepping up and replacing it.

They better. They claim a 2 year warranty I believe, on the tank and motors. "Within two years from the date of original purchase, Marineland Aquarium Products will repair or replace, at its option, any Eclipse System which is deemed defective in workmanship or materials.

This aquarium is under warranty against leaks or cracks due to defects in material or workmanship. If this aquarium is found defective--and has not been modified, damaged, or misused--call Marineland Aquarium Products at 800-322-1266 for a replacement (proof of date of purchase must be provided).

This warranty is void if the aquarium is not placed on a flat, level surface designed to support this size aquarium or if the aquarium is moved when it is not completely empty or if it is used for other than its intended purpose. Warranty does not cover loss of fish, personal injury, property loss, or damage arising from use of the aquarium."

That being said, I think every company experiences some type of production problems, eventually. It's nice to see that they're willing to accommodate their customers when that happens though.

man that isnt cool. i hope you get everything worked out.
