i've had an 8-9" oscar for 3 weeks, my water reads as:

ammonia:0
nitrite:0
nitrate:10 (before my bi-weekly water change)

Can I get any other medium sized fish (3-6") to put in there becuase my O has been sulking for a few weeks now and i'd like him to be more active in the tank. Please share any success stories you've had with Oscar tank mates in a 75 gal or smaller. (i.e. I can't put a Jag, peacock bass, or another oscar in there)

thanks in advance.

I have a Midas, Texas and Red Snook in there with my Oscar and they seem to get along for the most part oh almost forgot about the male convicts 3 of them.

The Convicts seem to keep the tank pretty busy.
Most of the above mentioned fish grew up together in this tank.

jack dempseys seem to do well with oscars, i would not recommend red devils, flowerhorns, or jags..

oscars are not THAT agressive, they do well with fish there size or bigger, but i would suggest a bigger tank if you plan on getting more fish a 100-120 gal would suffice

You could add maybe 4 Giant Danio's as dither fish to bring him out, instead of other cichlids.

Just a thought.

good suggestion, but I have 4 giant danios in there which he ignores them and stays at the bottom, I'm wondering when this personality that I've heard so much about with oscars is going to show.

Also, so far with my experience alone (don't all jump on me) my oscar seems fine in the 75 gal (its a custom hexagon with a 35" diameter) as far as space is concerned. He cruises along the lower strata of the tank, occasionally using the powerheads as a treadmill (I have 3). But for the most part he will stay still either lying on his side, or ducking behind the large rocks. As far as the bio load goes, I am meticulous with water quality and I am not concerned with that because I have always been a freak regarding the health of the tank. What I'd like to know is, if I have a seemingly docile Oscar, can I keep any other docile fish in there that may liven up the tank, should I try more danios to give more of a schooling effect? I've owned JD's and in the 75 hex, there would be waaaaay too much contact and I want my oscar to feel relaxed. More dithers?

With my tank I had a female Firemouth that I only saw twice in 10 days - so I added 12 Columbian tetra's and 2 days later she's finally out feeding and checking the tank out.

So perhaps so more giant danio's would be useful, and form a school. Would look quite good, mine certainly does now.

I guess I'll try a few more danios, I was hoping to hear something more colorful but owning large fish always frustrates me with the space they require. :mad2: At least do something Mr. Oscar.
