I don't know if you did look there... and I know when we used to have hamsters they escaped a couple of times... each time avoiding all 5 cats we had at the time and made their way all the way across the house to under our washer.
This was his setup. It's a 10g tank with a screen lid. I made it half water half land. I have changed some things around since the picture, I moved the filter/waterfall to the right back corner of the water area (since it was the cord that left a space on the back left corner where he got out), and the screen is 100% secure in the right corner with the cord. I changed some plants because I had some in there before the picture that died, and I needed more. And I also added gravel under the dirt (which I forgot to do last time, but I added it when I was looking for my frog in the dirt).
Well, I just did a search of the basement. We had a huge rainstorm a few hours ago, and our basement leaks A LOT! So I checked every body of water down there, and nothing. I checked under the washer, it was very dry and very dusty, and no frog. I even checked where we had no water, and I still found nothing.
I've been checking the bowls of water I left out every few hours. I'm also getting the "lol bowl of water?" from people who see them.
Well, while cleaning today, and a week after my frog has been gone, I found him. I can't say he's exactly alive. He was all dried out. I guess I was too late to find him. I put out bowls for him, but he never went into them, and if he did, I guess he stayed out of one long enough to dry up. At least now I know what happened to him, instead of wondering.
But I feel really bad. It was my fault he got out, so its my fault he died.
So sorry for your loss. Please don't beat yourself up. These things happen and you thought you had him secured in his tank.
I have two African Dwarf frogs, cute as can be. I hadn't had them long when I was doing a water change, and left the tank half full. (these guys are fully aquatic. Live underwater and only come up for air every now and then)
Anyway, I was in the other room getting a bucket of water and heard my sister yellling, "Frog!! Frog!!" She saw one of the ADFs flopping in the hall on the tile floor; had some dust bunnies on him. He had jumped out of the tank and fallen the equivalent of a five story building for a human. :nilly:
If she hadn't seen him he would have dried up in no time, or the cat would have gotten him! *shudder* :thud:
My sister had already dusted him off and put him back in the tank by the time I ran in there, so I couldn't check for injuries. For days and then weeks we watched, expecting him to die of a broken bone or something, but he's still here over a year later and is fine.
It can happen to any of us. You were much more careful than I was, and thought your cover would hold him.
(I never understood how my frog survived the fall to the hard ceramic tile floor. He must have landed behind the tank stand where I hadn't vacuumed in a while.:uhoh: I guess the dust bunnies saved him, lol)
I don't mean to make light of your loss with humor, I just was hoping to make you smile at my expense.
