Many of you know about my grandma's 300 gallon goldfish pond. Well, today the pond finally fully thawed out. It has been frozen all the way to the bottom (we checked) for 3 months. We didn't get the fish out on time, and we had 8 of them. One turned up dead, but another 2-3 are visible, alive, and swimming around looking very healthy!!! We can't believe it!

(THE END IS NEAR)

Lol! Does anyone know how they might have survived?

I had this happen to my Gma's goldfish pond. She didnt believe me when I told her that they would be alive when the ice melted, but sure enough all 3 were. Not sure exactly how it happens but I think they go in to a state of suspended animation, kind of like hibernation. lol I know if you freeze a house fly and then thaw it out again it will fly away as if nothing happened. =]

I thought they might have done something like that.

I've had that happen quite a bit while ice fishing. We set the fish on the ice and when we get home and put them in tap water to thaw them enough for cleaning, they would start to breath again move around. This has happened to perch, bluegill and crappie.

We checked in 3 different places in the pond and it was frozen solid.

they probably have something similar to the natural "ante-freeze" that most temperate climate frogs have. most of the frogs will be frozen solid in the winter but thaw out in the spring with no apparent damage.
