So today i bought some frozen brine shrimp from my lfs, and i was wondering what is the best way to feed it to my fish. should i thaw it out and then put it into my tanks, or should i just drop it in there all frozen?
I put the Shrimp in a warm glass of water to haw it out and it started to break into pieces, i then put the half thawed shrimp into my tank and it didnt sink, is this normal
When I feed it frozen, it floats a bit, until it fully thaws, then it sinks or floats around in the current. What fish are you wanting to feed? Most will learn to take it from the water column--bottom feeders and the 'pleco' family would be my only concern.
Just a suggestion. I thaw my brine shrimp in a cottage type container & then dump through a fine mesh net and rinse water through it again. Just look at all the color of the water after straining. Also if you are trying to keep soft water fishes, if you don't rinse, your salt content will increase every time you don't rinse. I feed frozen BBS every day and check hardness often because of this.
It is best to thaw and drain the shrimp, the juice can create clouding problems in the tank, to many nutrients released that no fish can consume. And eating cold food is bad for their tummies, like a brain-freeze from you eating ice cream, fish are sensitve to sudden cold but will swallow frozen food in a rush of competition for food.
I often feed my guys frozen food right before a water change. An awful lot fo the stuff get dissolved in the water so I am not too concerned with being neat and tidy with the stuff. The fish really love the explosion of food all around them. Of course they probably don''t get as excited the next day when they get no food at all.
I am using the shrimp primarily for my new adf, i bought him some sinking frog food, but i want to give him that everyonce and a while. i put the rest of the food in my 10 gallon for the betta and the mollies. all of my fish went wild for the food though!!
