Frozen Foods

Thaw all frozen foods! The juices are nasty and only pollute your water causing higher nitrates. Thaw, blot, then add any vitamin supplement and let it soak in well.

AHA!!! Just when ya think ya know it all....

I always thawed mine in hot water and then spooned it in :soda: ...stop cringing...lol. I'm thinkin' I've found at least a partial answer as to why my tanks are high in Nitrates in spite of the live plants and diligent maintenance.

You're not being any type of an @$$, though it appears I'VE been an ignoram@SS. :sad Thanks for the info.

All frozen food should be rinsed before putting in tank. In particular frozen brine shrimp that is hatched in salt water. I float mine in a small plastic container and then dump through fine net. Then at least once more I pour tap water over it all. BTW, collect strained water into a clear bowl and look at all the junk you didn't put in your tank. Also if not rinsed, brine shrimp will quickly raise the water hardness in your tank.

Rinsing or thawing in water can deplete water soluble vitamins.

Many of Hikari's foods say "Vitamins in the animal not the water" and "Guarantees your pet gets the vitamins." So really it shouldn't matter if you are rinsing or thawing in water, as long as you are feeding Hikari foods (bloodworms, tubifex, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, etc.).

I usually dump 1 in without letting it thaw. Sometimes i do thaw it in a plastic cup w/ warm water since i dont want all that fish stuff on the things i use to eat even though i would wash them. The thought of putting a spoon in your mouth that just held 50 bloodworms 5 minutes ago is kinda nasty.
