Fry Care

Good luck blue2fyre!

We currently have appox 30 O. lithobates fry in a 5.5g, its a piece of cake!. I feed them 3x daily a variety of foods. As mentioned, First Bites is a good food. Also, ground spirulina and flake food too. We also had good luck using a 3 day pyramid feeder when we were out of town on another broad of Rusty fry.

I'd recommended removing the mother soon after she spits them. I've seen them spit over a 3 night period and all at once, so no telling. Our litho spit all at once then tried to chase and eat them. We put her in a 10g for a week or so to get her eating well again.

Thanks for the advise :)

I don't know if I mentioned this before but these are my first fry! I plan on letting the mom spit the babies in the 5 gallon but if she still hasn't by the time we're ready to leave I'm going to have to strip her. I've done a lot of research about this technique and I plan to be as gentle as possible. It looks like she could spit them any day now though

some females it takes a while. if i were u, id strip her. it is siomuch easier and less stressful on her because she doesnt have to be acclimated to a new tank or anything like that. it is so much easier. u catch her(it takes practice to be able to catch her easily. u just have to guess where she is going to go next) and then strip and return her to the tank. and alot of the times, the other fish will not remeber her so she can be persecuted to get beat or possibly killed. thats just my persective. or you can have alot of hiding places and let it all go naturally. OR Or, make a few small cave or a pile of rocks with little crevices and after a few batches, they can learn to spit them in that pile

To spit or not to spit hmm that's the question.. hehehe..

I completely understand why you would want the mother to spit the fry out in a separate tank so that you may save several fry from the dinner plate and is a good resource. plus if this is your first time breeding cichlids its also enjoyable and an accomplishment feeling.

As for me i let them do the spitting in the main tank and the strongest prevail. Unless i was a breeder looking to make a some money off my juvies.

Stripping is so stressful just imagine being picked up and flipped upside down and someone taking a toothpick and prying your mouth open than shaking you. whoo hoo that should be a ride at Magic Kingdom. hehehe..

Have fun and enjoy..

Well I tried to strip her and got about 5 fry. I put her back in the main tank and she reminded the othr fish not to mess with her. She still has some fry but I felt horrible stressing her so much that I didn't try to get anymore. I don't see myself stripping any more, it's just too stressful. Thank you for all the help, the babies are so tiny but are eating

Yeah i am the same i really don't want to stress my female out so i let her go all natural, hehehe, later buddy and enjoy..

Depends what cichlid, some can have 10 fry and others can have up to 1000.

But with most african cichlids they usually have anywhere around 40 to 50 babies when there full grown give or take..

Pittbull,

i have 2 flower horns i bought about 1 1/2 months ago they had fry. Is that common? Not to mention they dont look like typical flowerhorns. I know they are hybrid. but, wouldnt 1 1/2 months be to short for them to mate?

Not necessary i had a pair of neolamprologus multifasciatus spawn at an inch and i was like wow that was small i think she had like 2 fry.

As for flowerhorns yeah your right not normal for that size but flowerhorns are not normal fish the thing is when fish are bred with others to make hybrids no one is sure what will take place and even more so is that most hobbyist are not sure they will be able to produce, most hybrids are sterile..

But its not unheard of fish breeding at one month of age..
