Fry Care

They are Hap. Flameback (mom) and we think that dad is a Hap. dayglow we also have a pair of brichadi's in the tank and a julidocromis dickfieldi x with some other julidocrimis not sure wich one it is. They are all in that tank. I want to seperate the two julies but we havn't been brave enough to tare apart the rocks yet.

A few things are pretty constant in this tank, filteration, water changes and food, lots and lots of food.

is that the only tank you have.

With my fry's they hatched when i was on vacation. So at the time my neighbor was feeding them. She didnt even notice there were babies. The parents just ground up their food and left it at the bottom of the tank.

Nope... (we have 12) but we don't have one that we can set up for the babies quite yet, they are all full of other fish with different H2O parameters. I was thinking about putting them with our shell dwellers but they are nasty fish and i was afraid they would just eat them. Maybe when they are a bit bigger, they are only two weeks old.

I just got home from vacation and all my baby fish lived :)

I just started them on crushed flakes and they took to it right away. They are so tiny and already showing typical mbuna behavior. Mom released the rest in the main tank while I was gone. I don't think any made it since my auto feeder didn't work and my fish were really hungry.

Thanks you all for the help. I'm gonna get some pictures soon so I can document their growth.

To spit or not to spit hmm that's the question.. hehehe..

I completely understand why you would want the mother to spit the fry out in a separate tank so that you may save several fry from the dinner plate and is a good resource. plus if this is your first time breeding cichlids its also enjoyable and an accomplishment feeling.

As for me i let them do the spitting in the main tank and the strongest prevail. Unless i was a breeder looking to make a some money off my juvies.

Stripping is so stressful just imagine being picked up and flipped upside down and someone taking a toothpick and prying your mouth open than shaking you. whoo hoo that should be a ride at Magic Kingdom. hehehe..

Have fun and enjoy..
in wat process of stripping a fish do you have to flip her on her back??? I dont use a tooth pick and there is no shaking involves. I use a turker baster while she is still in the water and squirt some water in the mouth and most of the fry come out after one squirt. so my process in stripping mother fish is OBVIOUSLY different than yours is.

More power to you as for my comment if not noted above was meant for comical purposes only hence the hehehehe part..

I don't strip nor do i stress my fish out more than necessary my post was OBVIOUSLY meant for allowing a mother fish to spit her brood naturally..

And as always this is a hobby so enjoy my friend.. everyone has an opinion..
