We have a 29 gallon aquarium with 6 female platy's. We are in the process of setting up a 10g aquarium for the babies that we weren't expecting. Until the 10 gallon is ready the few babies we have so far are in a breeding net in the 29g. My first question is should I put a plant in the breeding net? Right now they hide in the corners of the net but it seems like they would like it better with some cover. Second, does anyone have any advice about rasing these fry. We weren't planning on having baby fish but are willing to take on the challenge now that we have found them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Some java moss will provide cover and security to them. What are you feeding them?

Hikari first bites. Right now we only have 4 fry but it looks like there are more pregnant and possibly other babies we haven't been able to net.
Thanks for the information.

Another option as far as feeding is to place a small amount (3-4 pinches) of ordinary flake food in a ziplock baggy and crush it until it's basically powder. Use a toothpich as a spoon and feed the fry about 1/4 toothpick. I used this method x 2/day for my sunburst platy fry the past couple of months and it's worked terrific. They all grew like weeds.

Good luck. :)

I don't think its necessary, but I agree with Rick. A clump of java moss will provide some security, and a little live infusoria for the fry. Your fish would love you for it.
