As some of you may have already read in the catfish section my bullheads just laid eggs on sunday and i was wondering if anyone can help me on making or buying a thing that will prevent fry from getting sucked in by the filter. It is an Aqua Tech 30-60. In a 55 gal Tank.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe you could modify a sponge filter or other filter pad to slip over the intake

why not just buy a breeder net

Cover the filtyer intake with a sponge. This spreads the water back pressure and will show little to no effect over the flow rate,

Cover the intake with either sponge or a fine mesh.

What kind of bullheads do you have?

I am a huge catfish fan. I almost bought a channel cat today but my smart side kicked in just in time. I would need a pond for one of those guys. They get HUGE! They taste good too.

I just cover the intake with a section of pantyhose. I've also used a sponge filter and slid it over the intake. The second option didn't work out well for me because if there's the slightest gap between the sponge filter update tube and the filter intake, the fry will find it. Pantyhose is cheap (if you have a female in the house) and effective.

Thanks for your ideas ill try some of them or a combination of them. And By the way these are Black Bullheads.

Hey I've caught and eaten black bullhead! I catch em all the time around here. I tried taking a little one from the wild one time and keeping it in a tank but it didn't acclimate. Someone threw their worm container in the lake :mad2: and a little 1 inch bullhead got washed in by the waves so I kept him. He only lasted 2 weeks though.

oh im sorry to hear that. Mine have done extrordinarily well even though my water quality is not always very good. I once had 80 fry in a 2 gallon tank. Talk about an overstocked tank. But thanks for every ones ideas.

buy a sponge for an aquaclear filter, the smallest one and use an exacto knife to cut a small hole in it (not all the way through) and stick it on the intake.
