Fry vs. filter

My GBR have laid eggs again. The first batch of eggs were destroyed by the snails the first day. The snails have been removed and the eggs are now 2 days old. I understand they will hatch on the 3rd day so my question is this? What is the best way to try and protect the fry from getting sucked up through the intake tubes of both filters (eheim and hang over the back thing that came with the tank) without compromising the filter system? Is there a diffuser I can get at a place such as petsmart today or can anyone recommend something that I can make to act as a diffuser? My husband will not allow another fish tank to be set up so setting a fry tank up is not possible.

Also, will the fry stay with the parents until they are big enough to fend for themselves? If so, keeping them in a breeding box in the community tank is doable.

Cover the intake with nylon or sponge.

I take a large net and cut it off the handle and take a plastic electrical tie and attach it to the intake part of the filter, works great
I have them on all my freshwater and egglayer tanks

I use the filter media from an old penguin cartridge and a binder, it doesn't seem to bother the pump, a pet store sells sponges that you could cut a slit in and slide it over the end.........:)

Both ideas are great..I will cover both intakes tonight when I get home. Now does anyone know how the parents take care of the fry? Or do they fend for themselves when they hatched?

Wish i could help on that part, we never had GBR's but there on the list, our yellow labs stick close to the fry for about a month......:)

Parents will supposedly take care of fry. However it is also supposed to take a couple of breedings for them to get it right.

As for covering your intake filter... I have bought Fluval sponges for thei in-tank filter system and wrapped them around the intake tube and then attached them via suction cups... Will let you know how it works as I too have GBR eggs... only a day old so far though

This is my second batch and the parents have not left their eggs alone. The last time, they would wander off and explore and then come back to the eggs if they spotted another fish in the area.

it may still take a couple of spawning for them to get everything going correctly.

putting a sponge over the intake will diffuse the siphon of the filter through a greater surface area, which is much safer for the fry. plus, once they are free swimming and away from the parents, the sponge will provide them a place to graze
