Fry vs. filter

The eggs have hatched...yeah!!! I put mess bags over the intakes and the parents are doing a wonderful job at taking care of the babies. The male is more gentle with them than the female. He is also more attentive. Although the male is 3 times the size of the female she is the one running all the other fish off. The male is being a great dad. He scoops up the little wigglers that have wiggled off the clay pot, gently spits them back onto the pot. This is so exciting. I have had many many discus eggs that never made it to this stage. It is super cool to have GBRs getting their eggs to this stage.

awesome! good luck. any pics?!

after a couple days the wigglers should be free swimming.

If you don't have it, i'd suggest going to pick up either some BBS or first bites (they sell it at petco). Once they finished eating off of their yolk you should try to target feed them 2-3 times a day if you could.

Will definately try that. The little guys were not on the pot this morning so I don't know if they fell to the gravel or if the other fish got them. The parents are still guarding that area really well but I just don't see any movement from the pot. It just looks like "remnents" of the eggs. I thought I saw dark things moving on the gravel but I can't get a close look at them because of the decorations in the tank and I don't want to move any decorations for fear that some may be hiding in the decorations. I think I will just have to wait and see. I will still use a baster to put food in that area in case there are some still there.

Good luck with your fry... after two nights I still have some eggs that they are guarding and the look healthy (at least they haven't gone white) so I am hoping I will have wigglers as well in a day or two. Believe me I will be watching this thread... lol

I found the pile of wigglers tonight. The father moved them closer to the pot so I can see them again. They look like a pile of gray moving dots. I am amazed at how well the father is taking care of these little babies. I am going to ask my sister if I can borrow her macro lens tomorrow and take some photos of these guys. I tried last night with my camera/lens setup but couldn't get any clear shots. I couldn't get the manual focus to get close enough.

I was shocked at how fast these eggs hatched. They laid them sometime during the day tuesday and by thursday, they were hatched. I thought I had lost them all this morning because I couldn't find them but I can see them now.

Someone said that I would have to start feeding them when they lose their yolk sac. How will I know when they lose it?

i think its amazing how small the GBR fry actually is when they hatch... but yeah they'll still almost look like brine shrimp and won't really take on the look of an actualy fish for a little while.. well atleast it was too small for me to see it for a couple weeks.

good luck. i could never get pictures... the d*mn things are too small.

photo 1 and 2 are of the babies..the gray looking stuff on the gravel
photo 3 is Daddy watching over them
photo 4 is Mama running off a discus. It came out blurry because she was on the move
