it looks like a underwater praying mantis. It just died yesterday tho ugh. I got it for .19 in the ghost shrimp tank. I figured there pond raised shrimp so theres always some weird pond nasties that make there way in with them. I got a water beetle that died after a month and the water scorpion lasted 3 months. It was neat watching him catch guppies and ride them till they were tired then "suck" there insides out!

Your water scorpion was probably a species of Ranatra, by the way. They're pretty common in ponds and slow streams, especially where there's lots of vegetation and branches for them to hide in. I've kept them alive for several months on Daphnia and Gambusia fry, but they always end up dying without warning; I don't know why.
