I read one of my marine aquarium books.. and it's said skimmer can decrease a nitrate level.....? is it true???
 
Hi there. Well the function of the skimmer is to help remove excess nutrients and waste. Removing excess nutrients can also help with algae problems/outbreaks.

What book are you reading? Is it an interesting read?
 
well.. it's indonesian book... it's tell me all about marine fish.. from filter, skimmer, lightning, sump, live rock, sand rock, some fish tat eat coral, salinitas.

it's quite nice book...and cover all my problem.... but still many problem tat i have like make a water current >.<" one of my coral still not get the right current right now... sob sob

yup and to elaborate a bit more, the way they works is they foam and the micro bubbles cause the larger proteins and organic waists to get removed and into the cup as scum. they can reduce phosphates and nitrates a bit but they relly juts prevent the build up of organics hat would cause hight nitrates and ammonia. there are solutions u can add to the water to cause the skimmers to remove certain things though. like u can use a solution to specifically remove nitrates or phosphates or ammonia....etc.
 
wel... the problem tat i have right now is nitrate >.< even it's still in safe area.
 
i think what german is refering too here is things like rowaphos for phosphates, natural solutions like aquamarine nitrate reducer and bio-culture ammonia reducer...there are always various things that you can add to a tank to reduce or buffer a certain element....Whether they SHOULD be used is entirly down to the individual...
