With a liner you can have steep drop offs, you just need to arange it correctly. I do not prefer preformed for a variety of reasons. but the largest is you are stuck once you do it. There is no room for change. I have never found an advantage for performed over liners other than ease of installation and I am not convinced of that.
Actually, next time, I may go with clay instead of either alternative, although it is a bit more difficult it is much more natural and once in place, will work very well.
