hey my friend goes gigin in his creek alot out by his house and he says when ever he goes into the leafy areas and into the thick nasty crap in the creek, that he occationally comes accros these eel like creatures. i asked if they were snakes but he said they where slimey with no scales. they had suposedly giged one and killed it and he said it was definatly a eel of some sort. any ideas what it might be? i told him not to kill one next time and to bag it up and give it to me. id just like to find out what the heck they are

In your area, could be American eel (Anguilla rostrata), three-toed amphiuma or congo eel (Amphiuma tridactylum) or lesser siren (Siren intermedia). The last two are salamanders. Put up some pics if you can!

i think it was a american eel based on his discription. thats pretty cool are they fw or whats the deal in them?

I know people who have caught them in landlocked ponds and lakes around here, although fishbase says they can go brackish to full marine as well. We used to catch small ones under rocks in a brackish stream down by the beach as well.

they migrate to the ocean as they mature. they get big and mean. we use them as bait in nyc for large fish (blues and stripers). they love eating sand shrimp and chase fish when in my minnow trap. they always found a way out of my trap so be careful that your tank is covered well, they are very smart.

Gigging is another word for spearing, basically. This is a frog gig
