I have been on the koivet Forum (and many other pond Forums), and many ponders strongly believe that a wet/dry trickle tower lowers nitAtes in a fresh water system. Many there have repeated these low nitrAte results when using a trickle tower (with bio-balls or lava rock).

I wanted to ask those that have fresh water aquariums and a wet/dry trickle filter (typically with bio-balls) if they have low nitrAtes?

I know in the salt water aquariums, wet/drys are considered a "nitrAte factory", but I have been told the bio-bugs are different in fresh water?

Do you have a wet/dry trickle filter in fresh water service, and if so, are your nitrAtes low?

Thanks,
Mitch

Though I do not currently have a tower trickle system I am aware of their capabilities. In the store that I work in this is one of the systems that get used. They reduce nitrates because contact with atmospheric air releases them. They do work, and work well at this specific purpose, but really have no value for a small tank or small scale setup, as proper water control will prevent a toxic build-up of nitrates.

any place that is anoxic (low oxygen) will grow bacteria that convert the nitrate to free nitrogen gas.

it might simply be dilution caused by the additional water volume of the sump... I don't see anywhere for denitrifying bacteria to grow.

But do remember that nitrate is only an easily tested indicator of pollution. Remove nitrate by anaerobic bacteria, you have removed one pollutant - and the only one we can easily measure.

Vato, what store do you work in?

Thanks for The Replies..

For anyone interested, I would strongly recommend checking some of the threads on the following forums.

I know many people on the following "Pond" Forums swear they do reduce nitrAtes. And there are some very educated and well researched folks there...

I would recommend anyone wanting to read up on advanced theories by some very knowledgable folks to give them a look.
