Hi, I've read different opinions regarding the safety of garden hoses. I'm interested in using an old garden hose (used for at least 1 full summer) for my DIY python. Could this cause potential problems?

Thanks in advance.

I think it ultimately depends on the hose and how clean it is. I used a full length hose to fill up my tank and it has been doing fine. On the sink I use for water changes there is about a 4 foot section of hose and that is fine too.

Most utility garden hoses leach plasticizers and are not suggested. Potable water safe hoses are available at most home stores for a little more money, and are the proper selection for tank use.

There is a chemical in some garden houses that are added to make them pliable that can harm fish. Rather than risk it, I suggest going to a home improvement store and getting food and beverage rated hosing. It is in with the plumbing stuff and looks pretty much the same (though in varying dimensions) as the hose on a kitchen sink sprayer. They are clear and some can be wire reinforced. Not very expensive either. I got 20' for about 6-7 bucks.

sears hardware sells the stuff mentioned in bulk, home depot prolly does too.

i used a normal garden hose for awhile, but i always flushed it before use. it would take a couple of minutes of water running thru it to get the desired temperature anyway....

Thanks for your replies. We ended up going out to get the potable water safe hose. I really appreciate this site so much, good, reliable and quick responses. Thanks!
