So I hear all these great effects of garlic. I hear it makes the food tastier, it's good for the fish immune system and it might even kill some internal parasites. I believe one of my fish might have a internal problem, not eating, thin, a red sliver hanging out the anus. I was thinking maybe calamanus worms. I hope not but I have deworm flake with fenbenzenole on hand so I have the meds and have been trying to treat them but he runs at the surface of the water but then doesn't want to eat the flakes. All the others are eating it which I am glad because they are probably exposed. I plan on QT him and treating both tanks with the flake. Now I was wondering I have garlic powder at home and I can get some cloves from the store if need be. Will it help to sprinkle the flakes with garlic powder or mix the powder with the flakes I store in the freezer. Will the flakes absorb the garlic enough to make the fish want to eat it and help give positive effects. Or is this just a waste of time?

Try juicing garlic if you dont want to buy one and add to food just prior to feeding. Flakes should absorb the juices well.

Yeah, I would stick to an actual clove of real garlic, not any sort of processed stuff --powder or granulated or even the minced stuff in jars--sold in the spice aisle. Those frequently have "inert" ingredients added to keep them dry, free-pouring and give longer shelf life (preservatives), none of which have any medicinal value for fish.

Peel the paper part off until you have just the garlic itself. You can get a cheap plastic garlic press at a dollar store most likely, or else just use the flat of a heavy knife or spatula to mash it into, well, mush. Then add the medicinal flakes--2 or 3 times as much as the mass of garlic-- and mush all together. You can spread it out, let it dry and crumble it up, or just stick it as-is into a baggie and refrigerate until it's used up or till the next time you need it.

Label the bag so you don't inadvertently throw it into your next batch of spaghetti sauce. :)

there is also garlic juice sold in teh marine section of the fishstores (garlic guard I think its called). Its crazy expensive for what it is, but its super easy to use.

They also sell fish food with the garlic already in it at the pet stores. I fed my fish that while treating them and they ate it, although they didn't seem to love it as much as their typical diet.
