Help!! My Male Cr. Compressiceps is Gasping at the bottom of the tank. I recently transferred a male and female pair into a 30g along with some target fish. All the fish were fine for about a week. 2 days ago, I noticed the male with a what looked like a fresh Black eye (the underneath of his left eye was reddish).

Since that, he's been breathing very heavy at the bottom of the tank. He stays in his little cave. He still has enough energy to defend his territory. But I'm worried that he might not make it.

All the other fish in the tank are breathing fine. No problems at all. It's just this one Male Dwarf pike. I started using an air pump. I'm hoping that this does something. But it's been about 5 hours and still no signs of him getting better. I also added some Aquarium salt to help. But still nothing.

Any Ideas on what this could be or what I can do to resolve this.

Tank conditions:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
PH: 7

Are you sure the female's not doing it? I can almost guarantee it's the other pike. Cr. compressiceps are notorious for not playing well together. A 30 gallon tank is on the small side when trying to keep a pair of these. I'd suggest removing him to a hospital tank until he shows signs of improvement. Keep the tank clean so as to avoid secondary bacterial infections.

I'm going to put him into a hospital tank. But I don't think it's the female. The female is ready to get it on. Her belly is very pinkish/redish and whenever she goes anywhere near him, he attacks and pushes her away.

I'm really confused with this one. I did a water change, and like before, still nothing. Hopefully when I isolate him, he gets better. But he's really gasping for air. He doesn't even close his mouth. I noticed he's a bit plump. Just a little bigger than he normally is. Kinda as if he's full. Only thing is, is that he hardly eats.

Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how I make out. Any other suggestions, I'm all ears.
