How do you know when the GBRs are from Asia?
I asked in several stores and was told they are wild.

First off there is no such thing as a wild German Blue Ram. They are a hardier, domesticated variety of wild rams bred by the Germans.

Second, if the fish were from Europe, I think your LFS would be practically bragging about it. But that's just my thought...

Yes, mostly because it is cheaper. Supposedly (I'm no fishery expert) asian places tend to pump in hormones to make the rams appear more colorful, though they usually end up more sickly.

I got lucky with my LFS. They only have European bred rams after they had some problems with their asian ones a few years back. More expensive fish but very healthy and still really colorful!

jpappy is correct.
German Blue Ram(GBR) is the name given to Blue rams bred in Germany. one problem is the name is commonly misused i when referencing Blue Rams.

many are Asian Blue rams..this does not always mean these are pooer quality Blue rams. There has been some issues with many of the Blue rams coming from asia..as some of the breeders there use hormones to enhance the color of the rams.
the hormones have been known to cause health problems in these rams. also local breeders aare finding that these hormone enhanced rams have problems with successful spawns.

there are many local breeders and when done correctly you will find strong broods from these breeders. some of the LFS use these for their stocking.. you can sometimes tell these as they will be marked and the colors of juveniles is pretty bland.

Yes, Star_Rider is correct. If you're looking at small blue rams in the LFS and they are already very colorful, there's a good chance that they've been "colored up". I've seen very small, very colorful ones in Petco, no doubt they had far too much coloring for their age.
