Gecko Tank Under Construction

OMG they are extraordinarily cute! I never thought I would say that about a reptile.....tiny little dinosaurs. makes me want one...or five. Your setup is outstanding, as well.

Thanks!

I've always thought they looked like little "Raptors". :D

wow that tank looks great! the best desert setup i've seen.
Its good to see them making use of the verticle space too

Thank you. Yes, the geckos do use the vertical space. Mostly they like to lay in the different rock shelves. I decided on shelves to give them different temperature gradients to choose from.

Another note, I did some research about this brand of tank and it's not a 40 but a 50 gallon.

WOWSERS! I love your geckos, they seem super happy with your job. By the way it looks awesome.

My hubby would flip if he seen your post where you said you would give us a baby Leo Gecko. He would be worse than a kid at a puppy store....
"Please, Please, Please, I promise I will take good care of it and walk it and feed it everyday for the rest of my life." LMAO!

I want to know is it easy to keep all that sand clean? I have heard lots of bad things about putting them in a natural setup, which I think is sort of stupid. I thought they would be fine is a more natural setup, and possibly enjoy it more. What is your experience?

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with how it came out. :)

The substrate is pretty easy to keep clean. Leopard geckos are kind of like cats where as they use the same place to go poo everytime. All 3 have the same designated area where they go so cleaning it up is pretty easy. I just spot clean it when I see it. I also replace all the substrate in my enclosures twice a year.

There is an never ending debate on using sand as a substrate. I myself have been using it for almost 17 years and I never had a problem. I don't actually use pure sand. It's a mixture of screened play sand, EcoEarth and peat. It has been proven before that it is not a good choice to use when dealing with babies and juveniles. They can ingest it by accident and it can lead to impactions because as babies they're growing and have tiny little digestive tracts. I keep all my babies on paper towels for at least the first 6-7 months or until they reach 6 inches or more. But with adults there is almost never any issues. Most cases of impaction are a result of poor husbandry on the keepers part. The geckos might be eating sand because they are being deprived of calcium and other minerals. If you feed them properly and dust their food you shouldn't have a problem. If you're still scared about them eating sand you can always feed them outside the cage in tub or something. One thing you do have to watch is when your geckos shed. If they are not provided with a moist hide, they can get retained sheds on the tips of their toes.

I like using substrate because it doesn't take away their natural instincts to dig. And yes, they do like to dig out burrows under the flat stones in my tank.

Cool, we will probaly try to go pretty natural too and was just a little concerned but we are good mommy&daddy and we clean up after all our pets asap.
I am just a person that would rather go natural for them instead of a carpet flooring and gauti stuff than don't even appear to be natural to them. I have seen poor leo's in setups before where they just stand there and look around like "O MY REPTILES" where have they put me. Bright Pink/Blue/Red outdoor capet and seashell watering bowl, poor lizards.

Fantastic!

I've never seen such a natural-looking desert type of enclosure. Those geckos must be so happy! I love what you did with the "shelf" rock background. It's very unique compared with what I've seen.
