Gender of Fish

Yes but no one has answered my question or said how many fish I should have! They're just yelling at me for me being stupid. I've only owed fish for about a 1 year and they seem to be doing fine.
 
I don't think anyone is yelling at you and know one said you were stupid. I think they are just concerned and probably angry at the two local fish stores that gave you the wrong info. From what I have learned, goldfish need alot of space maybe 20-30 gallons per fish (and even more for comets, koi, etc.) They can grow pretty large and produce a lot of waste which can be toxic to them if they are not cared for properly. If you scroll through some of the posts on hear you will start to get a better idea of how many goldies will fit in a certain sized tank. Wish I could be of more help, but I'm also pretty new at keeping goldfish. I always know that I can turn to the people on this site if I need help though. Don't get discouraged, good luck with your fishies!!!
 
OK, I think ya'll got the point across... now, any one have the answer to the original question? I sure would like to know. Doing something incorrectly was never a reason to hold an answer to a question hostage on this board that I recall.

I did a search in the Coldwater forum to find the same answer initially. Got all excited when I found the post thinking I'd find the answer. That's the first time I visited here for information and didn't find it.

Please do not use this latest post as a platform for how to properly keep goldfish. I really want to know how to sex mine. They are Comets.

it's VERY difficult to determine the sex of goldfish unless they are spawning. male goldfish develop numerous small bumps on the head, opercula and pectoral fins. These bumps are called tubercles and usually disappear at the end of the breeding season. They are occasionally mistaken for external parasites.

also, the females will generally be larger and more full-bodied than the males. In addition, a female ripe with eggs will have a swollen abdomen which will set her apart from the more streamlined males.
 
I'll have a look at my goldfishes to see if any of them have swollen abdomens. The only thing I've heard about determining the gender is the tubercles.

A question is asked about sexing fish and the OP is attacked?

As a new poster, I doubt I am going to fit in here if this is the norm!

Wuzi, there are several things to look for including but not limited to the midline ridge, firmness of abdomen, shape of the vent, shape of the pectoral fins.

Wuzi, Google "Sexing goldfish" you will find plenty of info on sexing your fish.
 
I don't think anyone was yelling on the post, just hoping to get the OP to understand the issues. Of course, the answer could have come sooner but 10 goldfish in a 15 gallon and 6 in a 6 gallon is kind of an emergency if you ask me and the big issue. Usually if there 1 or 2 fish over the line, fine but there were way too many. The fact that the OP thought anyone was yelling was the indication of what I would think was the OP not liking the answer they got. Inevitably, the tank is doomed because there will be no way to keep on top of the bio loads of either tank and some feel it is their right to be able to try to explain that to a new keeper. How unfortunate it is to take the constructive criticism negatively.
