My Pets Play So Nice Don't They?!!

Getting into caring for fish can be very confusing at first. So many different opinions from so many people. I went to a fish store and asked about getting bigger tanks for my new betta because he didn't seem happy in his little "betta bowl", and the girl said "don't get him anything bigger. They hate that becuase they're used to living in puddles." Can you believe that? After reading in so many websites how much happier they are in bigger spaces, I just left the store irritated. It just bothers me when pet store employees just tell you things that they're not 100% sure of when it could possibly be risking the health and life of your pet! Sorry for complaining, but I just had to get it out to people I know would understand...

Ah, another LFS complaint thread. We all know how you feel. There doesn;t seem to be a LFS out there that hasn't given its share of bad information to the unsuspecting public. It's a real shame more people don't do research, like you, however, and just assume the folks at the LFS know what they're talking about. I swear, if I had a nickel for every piece of bad advice every LFS ever gave, I could probably join Donald Trump's yacht club.

All the LFS's around me are awful!
Except one, I've never been given bad advice, and they always help with everything.
They give me deals on almost everything too, because I'm there so much :p

A lot of places give a lot of bad info about a lot of things. I repair instruments. There are a lot of people out there I know who are very bad, a couple are good. You have to educate yourself on what you're getting into.

You should have corrected the LFS lady..."Well actually, they don't like puddles. If someone found you in a closet, should they assume you like being there?" And then show her a picture of the vast bog a betta has in a rice paddy. They aren't small puddles.

good luck

I can understand being upset at someone giving you such dumb information, but I think its pretty stupid to not ever go to a LFS again because one stupid general employee gave you bad advice. Since LFS are usually pretty rare, I usually disregard anything anyone there tells me, but still buy fish/products etc, if they look perfectly fine. Dont rely on staff at LFS for information, get it from other places (like here). Forget the staff and just focus on the quality of their fish and products. I imagine its very hard for LFS to keep a staff that is completly knowledgable on everything, since they dont really pay much. So i say, forget the staff and just focus on the state of their fish stock.

any time you get any info at all from a lfs, go on the internet and look it up. 9 times out of 10, (or 99 times out of 100 if your at petsmart or petco) any answer that theyll give you is wrong... always question it, unless you personally know that the person your talking to knows what theyre talking about....

Yeah I guess. I was just aggrivated at what she said and how she said it like she KNEW the answer. If she wasn't sure, she should've said "I'm not sure, but let me find out for you." And this may not be correct, but if the staff is not knowledgable wouldn't that lead to problems with them caring for their stock effectively? Anywho, I went to another store in a different city and found one kid that has several of his own tanks for over ten years and he was very knowledgable. So to me that does make a difference in where I go.

I would agree with what nvan has said. Many fish stores may not care, or are ignorant. Many others know their stuff. If you encounter such a store, stick with it. I generally wouldn't disregard an LFS on the basis that one employee said you shouldn't get a large tank for a betta. In an LFS, it is universally considered OK for a betta to be kept in a cup or small bowl. Although this is ok for the interim, many customers see it and think it is ok for the long-term. Although I personally believe that bettas don't need anything larger than 2.5 gallons per fish, having a larger tank would most certainly be better for it.
