Generally disturbing tone about some posts

I just finished reading several posts which featured rude and in some cases, barely literate, responses to posters' questions. I must say that I felt genuinely insulted just reading the tone of some posts. I haven't been on the board too long, but I am seeing a disturbing trend toward "bashing the newbie" and those people who don't share our views about the hobby. Fortunately, it looks like the moderators are doing their part to curtail this trend as much as possible without stepping on people's rights to express themselves. Most of us are friendly people who want to help. I think that the minority of posters are off-putting for the majority.

We are all here because we share an interest in a common topic and we want to make friends, educate each other and share a few laughs along the way. I think that we also need to keep in mind that we have posters of all ages-- young and old. Anyone else here a little disturbed by the hostile tone that has been taken by a number of posters?

we try our best to keep the board balanced in giving people liberty to express themselves, but always in a respectful manner.

We don't, however, catch every blunder,... if you do, feel free to report the post and it'll be looked into within minutes.

Thanks.

i had know idea this was happening???

then agin the mods r awsome so it should be resolved quickly

I completely agree that the Mods are awesome. In fact, I hope it was clear that I was praising them in my first post. I am more concerned for the need for general civility. I know you can't please everyone, and I am certainly not an easy to offend person. I just noticed at least 6 posts in which the advice given to the "newbie" was sound, but the delivery was, shall we say, "unlikely to make someone wish to take his/her advice?"

I've never really seen anyhting that i considered rude or obnoxious. I think people get annoyed when reading that someone has two oscars in a 20g or a common pleco in a 10g, and that translates into their posts (because theres a thread like that almost daily).

Also, as i've learned with emails, its hard to tell the tone of someones comments in writing... What someone says one way someone may take another.

Well said, i tried to reason with the 5-6 posters involved , hope they saw the reasoning part of it

Agreed, but most times, the Oscar owner or Pleco owner has been given bad information by someone else before they even got to us. Not everyone who makes fish mistakes is doing so out of an apathy toward the well being of the fish. I get angry about goldfish bowls, but I know that the best I can do is gently suggest a workable alternative, and if I want them to take my advice, I'd best win them over rather than make them feel stupid.

As to the tone of someone's comments, that must be why we have all of those little emoticon thingys to the right :thm:but you're right, even they are either overused or inadequate.

I have been a member on a LOT of forums... and also moderated numerous forums

and to be completely honest-- I see 99% LESS of that on AC than any other forum I have used... the people here are the most polite of anyone I have met.. and the moderators do a great job

I know which thread you are talking about as well. I see both sides of the issue: more knowledgeable fish keepers get caught up in their passion and become upset in certain situations. It's easy for things to get out of hand. At the same time I feel some of the posts were unnecessary and rude. People need to think about the feelings of others, and all it takes is a second read through of your post before you hit the reply button.

Just don't let one instance ruin the reputation of the entire forum. You;ll always run into people who act in a similar way, but I find that AC's members are the most helpful hobbyists I've had the pleasure of knowing. :)
