Generally disturbing tone about some posts

..I think maybe if he would just check his water parameters his writing might get better. :)

I was forever traumatized by tests in school and have sworn an oath to forever run from tests of any kind :silly:.

Yet, this crazy thing called life seems to line me up for them on a regular basis .

When I first joined, flaming was the norm. Do any "vets" remember GraphicDesigner (spelling is off)? His posts were downright dastardly, though he did know what he was talking about. I was actually scared to post, for fear that he would get a hold of the thread. I think that the site has come a long way, and that even the less tactful among us are still a cut above most forums. :)

Cheech mentioned the report button at the start of the thread - very important option for posts which any one feels are questionable (actually pm Cheech too/instead :D).

Joking aside...the issue of what are perceived to be repeated threads by stupid/ignorant people who are deliberately harming fish is not all that complicated when you're trying to help keep this community friendly (great to see that so many people think, like I do myself, that this is a friendly place).

Basically, expressing disdain/contempt/overt dislike for another member of the community, which is cloaked in or even accompanied by genuine concern for a fish is out of order and unacceptable, in my opinion.

It creates an unpleasant environment. It only leads to further aggravation, and it is pointless, as nothing constructive ever comes from that kind of negativity.

If you see a thread which you find absolutely fascinating, to the extent that you just can't take your eyes off it, like a Cobra facing a mongoose, but for some reason you can't be polite in reply to it - next thread please. There'll be another one along in a minute.

The views expressed are the members own. I'm Coler and I typed this post.

Who is this Coler of which thou speak? The knave and bane of fishkeeping everywhere I do surmise. A fortnight shall not pass without the "Lord of Keepers" expounding upon thine Royal Subjects the need for water as clear as the fair maiden of thine dreams.

Meanwhile back at the ranch. . . .

Yes, we certainly have those that repeatedly ask the same question because the answer given though correct, is not the one they want and at some point a line is crossed. It happens frequently in chat and the same person follows up with a post yet again on the same topic. So for those that weren't there, the treatment may seem harsh and it would be best to use PM to the person you question about their answer. Don't start a flame war unless you are willing to be banned.

Some of the more immature members do give undeserved and cruel answers to a question, not only questions from a noob but also from more experienced members. To those persons I would suggest they go elsewhere. If the answers we provide are so wrong, why have I found provided answers cut and pasted onto another site, sans any credit to this site or the poster that answered? When someone poses a question that I feel qualified to answer, I do so with all intents of trying to educate and not humiliate. Having also learned that water chemistry is important, I do not feel it warrants 15 people repeating it or someone posting "I agree" without adding something useful. The redundancy gets a bit old.

Being a moderator means balancing between supervision and censorship. It also means being a peacekeeper when it's the last thing you want to do. Yes, there are some people that should never be a mod for any number of reasons and there are some that make great ones. At the end of the day, we all make mistakes and need to remember that.

I know the thread we are talking about also. I always try to remember that some that come here asking for advice don't have the experience that myself, and some of the others here do. The poster in the thread we are speaking of was 13, and simply didn't know what to do. All that being said AC is the best forum I've ever been a part of, and these incidents are few and far between. I try to be constructive in everything I say. If I can't say anything nice; constructive, I don't say anything at all ;)

I really have to drop a thought here.

There is a reason why I don't post threads here anymore and just comment on others threads, with the exception of 2 threads that I posted just to show a thing about myself that peoples perceptions were not quite correct.

My cooking thread got me a major flaming from a few people all because of a stove that was splashed and had not had its weekly cleaning, it even got people questioning my whole career as a chef and restauranteur. Very funny actually all from one or two pics. They even went to town judging my based on pictures of the kitchen of a not for profit community arts center where I do concessions to help them raise money.

And then there is the puppy thread I did where people seemed to think it was their god given right to attack me because I would not spay an neuter my purebred chinese crested dogs, like I was the biggest monster for not listening to them.

All in all a shame really because people jumped on the bandwagon and it really gave me a bad taste in my mouth for posting threads here. And I thought I had a few things good to contribute too, yet, if certain people want to treat this as thier little domain to rule because their position gives them a form of impunity so be it, it's the communities loss

i have always felt that a way to avoid such problems is to answer the post in the following manner

1) actually answer the persons question and help them while doing so
2) give some pointers for them to hopefully learn from

Example:
i think the reason you fish is acting strange is due to the lack of water changes, water shouyld be changed every.....................

in all honesty you shouldnt have 36 gold fish in a 3 gallon fish bowl, they produce lots of waste and would be comfortable and best suited in a ......................................
