Generic Media for TetraTec 300 filter

I've had a TetraTec 300 filter on my 55gal tank for about 9 months now, and while the biofiltration works very well (via a wet-dry sponge), I find that the replacement filter media (dual-density floss pouches which can optionally hold activated carbon) tend to clog often and are very difficult to clean. Also, they tend to be rather expensive because I have to replace them so frequently.

The layout of/flow through the filter compartment isn't bottom-up, but rather back-to-front, and I'm wondering if I could use generic foam/floss media in the filter instead, which would hopefully save money and be easier to clean.

Has anyone tried generic media with this filter? If so, what have you tried and/or what would be recommended? (Keep in mind that this is purely for mechanical filtration, as a separate sponge in another area of the filter is used primarily for biofiltration.)

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

P.S. I do plan on replacing this filter at some point, hopefully with a canister, but financially that's not an option at this time. Also, I do like the heater being integrated into the filter as opposed to in the tank itself, so this might involve saving up for those nice Eheim thermo-canisters. :)

Generic media will work in pretty much all filters, the filter doesnt know that it isnt the proper brand ;). Get some, cut it to size, and put it in.
