Do you think I would have any problems buying what I think is a male and a female that haven't paired off by themselves, or should I buy a bonified pair ?

I only bought a male and female. Not pre-bonded. If you can see a pair in the tank that appear bonded, though, I'd definitely get those over a random male/female pair.
