Hi guys, I got a female german blue ram yesterday at Big Al's and noticed that ever since sbe got out of the bag, she has been swimming close to the ground. She is alert and still has an appetite, but she just can't swim in water column.

When I was at the store, I pointed the fish I wanted out to the employee but then that fish ran into a crowd of fish. He netted one and it's the one I got. I know for sure that the one I pointed at was swimming fine.

Why can't the fish lift off? Will it be able to swim properly again?

Hey..I wouldnt get overly worried at this point..as long as she is eating and is alert and moving this sounds normal to me..rams like to occupy the bottom of the tank so thats normal. Is she swimming ok besides the fact shes sticking to the bottom? Or is she staying in the same place/appear to be breathing heavily?

She's not breathing heavily, but is completely belly to the ground. I wouldn't say it's swimming, but gliding along the bottom? If she goes higher into the water column, she'll come down and rest on a leaf before going down to the ground.

I'll wait and observe her though. Thanks guys.

Nope, it's just a regular german blue. 'Makes me mad that the LFS guy may have gotten me the wrong one though.

I'd say it's a swim bladder problem - fairly classic symptoms. Can affect any fish.

If you really feel that something is wrong then I would return it before too much time passes.

I don't think Big Al's will take live fish back...they only take dead fish and give you 50% credit.

Bummer!
