Hey everyone, I just added 6 cory cats to my 29g that has two GBR in it. As soon as I added it, one ram is constantly going after them when they're on his side of the tank. I thought these guys were compatible. Will this stop after some time? What should I do? :wall:

Thank you!!! :shakehead:

Even when the cory's are totally still, if they're on the cichlid's turf then they get pushed around. Is this going to be added stress on my GBR and cories? Please help! :)

is this a pair of rams.. as in male/female?

if so they may be breeding pair and this will be a problem for most fish who enter their territory.

if you have 2 males..you may still have an issue as male rams will 'carve' out territory of their own ..

I have no idea of the sex, but whatever it is they are the same sex. Each of the rams have their own territory that they even keep each other out of. What should I do?

Unfortunately, all cichlids have a strong personality of their own! Many GBRs are compatible with cories... and there's a boisterous few that don't like when ANY animal is on their side with them. I have a baby convict who loves to beat up on snails that get too close, but unfortunately the snails don't learn too well.

Do the cories have any safe space where they can go, or are they harassed unrelentingly? Ultimately, it's up to you, but I would consider returning the cories because they will indeed be stressed (and even potentially killed) by the territorial ram. Cories don't seem to learn to stay out of others' territories.
You could try a schooling fish that'll inhabit the upper part of your tank - rams don't usually bother them. Of course, just pay attention when you introduce them and remove them if they're being harassed more than just an initial annoyance.

I just got home after being out of the house for a few hours, and everyone seems to have calmed down. I was planning on moving everything in the tank around to mix up their territories, hopefully deterring this behavior. I'm going to watch them over the next hour and if I see this I'll be doing that. Do you think this might work?

Ah, it's still going on. I don't think that moving the territories around will work, they'll probably just set up new ones. What a shame I would have loved to keep these two types of fish together. I'll be returning these 6 cory cats to the LFS as soon as it opens tomorrow. What goes with a couple territorial GBR then? I have 4 Harley's in there right now but I'm not sure what else I should put in there with them. I'm getting four more Harley's once the LFS gets more in stock. Dwarf gourami? They tend to stick to the top right? Maybe some cardinal tetras? Just sucks I can't have the cory's.

Is that good enough stocking for a 30g?

2 x GBR
6 x Cardinal Tetra
8 x Harlequin rasbora

I just don't want it to look empty. Bummer :shakehead:
